95.22% of the animals used for research in 2018 in Span felt pain.

According to the latest report on the use of animals in experimentation that the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) has sent to the European Commission, 836,096 animals were used for for scientific and educational purposes, 33,120 more than in 2017. The species more used were mice (62%), fish (10.6%), and poultry (9.5%). 98, 3% were used in experiments for the first time and 1.6% were reused.

623,130 mammals were used in experiments (amongst them, 276 cats and 1,132 dogs), and 125,186 fish, a "relatively high" number of species of fish compared with previous statistics, according to the report.

The report specifies the degree of pain, stress or suffering felt by animals during the procedures and reveals that 52% of them suffered mild pain and 36% moderate pain (435,810 animals and 300,199, respectively). However, 60,398 animals felt "severe" pain (7.22% of the total) and 39,689 did not regain consciousness after being used in an experiment under general anesthesia (4.75%).

In addition, of the 836,096 animals used last year, 529,652 (66%) were not genetically altered and 300,000 had been genetically altered - with or without some pathological phenotype - for specific investigation of a disease.

Given the special sensitivity to the use of primates, the statistic includes a section with specific information on the use and origin of the 274 specimens used in 2018. 72% of the total (198 primates) were born in Africa, 73 in Asia and three in a registered establishment of the European Union.
