The whale migration corridor in Spanish Mediterranean waters was approved

During the 20th Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean, held on 17 December in Tirana (Albania), the whale migration corridor was declared a Specially Protected Zone of Mediterranean Importance" (ZEPIM), a marine zone located between the coasts of the Balearic islands, Catalonia, the Valencian Community and between the Gulf of Valencia and León.

This approval is very important due the ecological value of this maritime space as a migratory way for cetaceans and for being the habitat of a great diversity of species of marine fauna and birds.

As a direct consequence of this resolution, the Ministry of Energy of the Spanish government will have to close the file of all projects and applications for hydrocarbons, gas and oil exploration permits that affect these spaces and elaborate a Royal Decree, at this time in processing, which determines preventive protection measures.

The migration corridor represents the culmination of the work and the campaigns carried out for two years by international organizations and the platform Aliança Mar Blava, to which Ngo ADDA became adhered.
