FEBA rejects proposal to introduce wild boar hunting with lances in Castilla La Mancha

On July 12, 2012.- the Federation for the Well-being of the Animals, FEBA, was informed that a Spanish landowner has made a proposal to introduce the hunting of wild boar with lances at his estate in Castilla La Mancha. FEBA have expressed their absolute opposition to this Project and their astonishment that it should even be proposed.

At a time when work is going forward for a new, updated, law for animal protection at Castile La Mancha in conformity with the will of the majority of citizens, this proposal appears absurd and it seems almost unbelievable that it could be receiving even the most cursory consideration.

This immensely cruel form of hunting with mounted riders chasing down a boar with pointed lances is commonly called "pigsticking" and was practised in colonial India by the British for so called entertainment. But colonial days are long gone and India is now an independent country with a growing economy. To re introduce this throwback to a different crueller age is an anachronism that sits very badly with modern Spaniards.

The move to introduce "pigsticking" in Spain offends the majority of the Spaniards and the argument that the project would bring in money for the country carries no weight with those who do not want the world to think of them as a backward country still stuck in the customs and practices of the Middle Ages.
