On July 17th 2012, member organizations of the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE) , whose representative in Spain is Ong ADDA, held a Day of Action in 15 EU countries to draw attention on the cruelty behind animal experiments of Botox, used in medicine and cosmetic treatments.
The Botulinum toxin, used in medical treatments, is widely used to temporally reduce facial lines and wrinkles. Every year, thousands of mice are used in cruel experiments to test this substance, using the LD50 poisoning test. This involves appalling suffering for animals. They suffocate slowly though muscle paralysis while fully conscious.
However, recently the U.S. company Allergan received the approval of US and European agencies for the use of a non-animal cell test method. Therefore, we call upon other companies to stop using mice in cruel tests for their botox products.
It is totally unacceptable that this cruel test continues to be carried out. We urge the authorities and companies to act so that botox tests become a thing of the past.
