TVE resumes bullfight live transmissions

Madrid, August 2012. - Since 2006, no bullfights have been broadcast by the Spanish state TV. This is due partially to the high cost of the transmissions and partly because they were considered to contravene the “Style Manual” of TVE, particularly the section dealing with “Violence to Animals” in that they show acts of extreme violence against animals at a time when children may be watching.

One of the first measures taken by the new conservative Popular Party Government after winning the elections and having taken charge of TVE, was to take out the explicit reference to bullfights in the ‘Violence to animals' section. The bullfighting lobby is persistent in its efforts to get these broadcasts back onto a public channel.

ADDA Ong considers this move a huge regression because bullfights are a representation of extreme barbarism and violence towards animals. Such broadcasts have an adverse effect on society, especially if viewed by minors.
