Madrid, September 26, 2012. - The Madrid City Council voted, in plenary session, the declaration of bullfighting as "a component of the intangible cultural heritage of the people of Madrid.” All the votes for the move came from the PP. The parties UPyD and PSOE abstained and IU voted against. The initiative for the statement came from PP Councillor, Paloma Garcia Romero. Romero is also president of a bullfighting school. The ultimate objective of this statement is that the Spanish Government will present "at the time and in a timely manner" the candidacy of bullfighting to be registered in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
For animal lovers this will mean more money for bullfighting in Madrid, in addition to the amount that it receives from the Community of Madrid, which already allocates 1% of the culture budget, and other 2,197,407 € for bullfighting issues and 350,000 € from the budget for Youth. These public aids to bullfighting are even more shocking when the Madrid City Council is cutting basic services to its citizens, is lowering the salaries of its employees and raising taxes. All this, despite the majority opposition to bullfighting in Madrid according to the survey conducted in June 2011 by Sigmados and commissioned by Ong ADDA.
