Tenerife (Canary Islands) December 2012.- Guadalupe Mora, responsible for the Environmental Area of the Council of Tenerife has given the permission to shoot 15 stray dogs whose only crime has been to be abandoned
ADDA wants to protest against this appalling decision and calls for adoption of non-lethal alternative to catch the animals and bring them to an animal shelter.
ADDA wants also to remind the Council that the decision to allow shooting down of animals is based on the Canary Hunting Law 7/1998, of July 6, effectively saying that the dogs are feral and not, as is the case, abandoned. This clearly infringes clearly the Animal Protection Law of Canary islands.
Veterinarians have reported that it takes hundreds of years for pet dogs to revert to a condition that could be considered feral. This case suggests that the law is being used wrongly, simply to justify the killing of stray dogs
