Brussels, June 2013. - A group of MEPs, which include the Spanish Raul Romeva and Santiago Fisas, submitted a Written Declaration on the "immediate cessation of torture and mistreatment of greyhounds in Europe."
Spain is, unfortunately, one of the worst of the EU countries, regarding the treatment of greyhounds (Galgos) used for hunting. Abandonment, torture and hanging of these dogs are still common practices in many regions of Spain.
The Written Declaration 0006/2013 calls on the European Commission to immediately stop these cruelties to Greyhounds in Europe and apply EU legislation concerning the welfare of animals.
Ngo ADDA, through The Spanish Federation of Animal Welfare (FEBA), has been campaigning for years against the mistreatment of greyhounds in Castilla-La Mancha. To date we have handed in 60,000 signatures to the Government of this autonomous Region, urging for the modification of the obsolete animal protection legislation and for them to take effective measures to protect greyhounds. Despite our efforts nothing has been accomplished to date.
MEPs have until July 15, 2013 to vote in favour of the Written Declaration. Ngo ADDA has sent a letter to all of the 54 Spanish MEPs encouraging them to endorse this important European initiative, which, so far has gained very few votes of support.
