ANIMAL PROTECTION ASSOCIATIONS HAND IN 17,970 HANDWRITTEN SIGNATURES AGAINST THE DECLARATION OF BULLFIGHTING AS A PART OF SPANISH CULTURAL HERITAGE
Madrid October 1, 2013. – Ngo ADDA Ong sent to the President of the Congress of Deputies, Mr. Jesus Posada, a letter against the bill that plans to declare bullfighting called a Spanish Cultural Heritage. The letter was accompanied by 17,970 handwritten signatures endorsed by 35 Spanish animal protection associations.
That letter records the deep disappointment that is felt as a result of this bill. The proposal that the public torture of animals in bullfights and bullfighting events receive official recognition and support for their continuation as a tenet within the national culture represents a cultural and moral decline. The vast majority of citizens feel ashamed of these events and such recognition darkens the name of Spain with the other European members.
We are sure that this obstinacy in maintaining institutionalized cruelty to animals will be considered, in years to come, as a black episode in Spanish history.
We also published, in the newspaper 20 Minutos - edition of Madrid, on 1 and 2 October 2013, the open letter we addressed on June 28 2013, to the Spanish deputies and senators, to protest against this shameful bill. (See article: ADDA address to the Members of Spanish Parliament – 9/07/2013)
