Barcelona , 29/10/2013.- the political parties CiU , ERC , PSC , ICV - CUP EUiA presented a joint proposal bill to incorporate a new paragraph in Article 6 of the Catalan Law on Protection of Animals. The new article will ban the use of animals in circuses in Catalonia, including horses, pets and all other domestic animals. The parties PPC and Ciutadan’s opposed the proposal.
The Secretary of the party CDC, Josep Rull , explained that today the presence of animal in circuses " is absolutely unecessary " in Catalonia and he considers that such proposals "put Catalonia at the same level as the rest of Europe." The MP Jordi Terrades of the Socialist Party ( PSC ), argued that a cultured society should be concerned about the well-being of animals.
Currently 99 Catalan municipalities already ban this kind of shows in their districts. Tthis Parliamentary proposal will extend this ban to the whole territory of Catalonia. Once again the Catalan Parliament leads the fight in defense of animal rights.
Although this initiative represents a step forward in the protection of animals, the MP of the left-wing party , Hortensia Grau said " there is still a way to go" , referring to the prohibition of correbous (bullruns) . The deputy Quim Arrufat of the party CUP also declared the his party is in favor of banning the correbous and welcomed the progress represented in the banning of animal circuses .
