UN calls to protect children from the " violence of bullfighting "

February 5 - . As a result of a report presented by the Franz Webber Foundation , as part of his campaign, ‘Childhood Without Violence’, the Committee on the Rights of the Child, which is at the centre of a process to monitor States’ implemantstion of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, has explicitly ruled against the participation of children in bullfighting training and performances, as well as their atendance as spectators at bullfight events.

The observation was first made in relation to bullfighting in Portugal, examined in 2013 by the UN body, but, since the Convention on the Rights of the Child seeks to guarantee the children’s rights globally, the statement is applicable to all member States.

The Convention recognizes the right of all children (under 18 years) to a standard of living adequate for their physical , mental , moral and social development. It is also a duty of the State to take measures to ensure the child such protection , a condition that is not fulfilled in the the case of exposure of children to bullfighting. At the meeting held on 22 and 23 January in Geneva , several Committee members expressed the following:

• "the Participation in bullfighting activities of children and adolescents is a strong violation of the articles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child" .

• " The physical and mental violence associated with bullfighting impacts upon the well-being of children.”
