Canned Hunting is the hunting of wild animals in a confined areas behind fences from which they cannot escape. The animals involved are, hand-reared and bottle-fed, are habituated to human contact, so they are no longer naturally fearful of people. This makes easier for hunters from all over the world to be guaranteed a trophy .
In South Africa, there are over 160 “canned lion” hunting camps. About 8,000 lions are reared in captivity for that purpose. Also demand for lion bones for traditional Chinese medicine offers breeders a lucrative return.
