EVERY SINGLE HOUR 1,300 ANIMALS SUFFER IN EU LABORATORIES
April 24, 2014 is worldwide Laboratory Animal Day. This date was declared by the United Nations and chosen to commemorate the birth of Lord Lodwin , who was president of an English committee which began, in 1875, the fight against animal testing.
Ong ADDA together with the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE ) reacted last December, with disappointment to the figures revealed in the publication of the 7th Report on the Statistics on animals used in experimentation in the European Union. The report found an increase in the number of animals used in species such as mice, horses , donkeys , foxes, seals, otters , badgers , ferrets and fish ( see ADDA news - Disappointment at EU statistics on animal experimentation).
According to the 2012 report, published on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, the number of animals used in experiments in Spain amounted to 910,278, which represents an increase of 10,151 animals, compared to 2011.
In view of the forthcoming European elections in May- 2014, the Coalition ECEAE, which currently represents 25 animal protection associations in 23 EU member countries, presented to all political parties the following proposals to improve the situation of animals used for experimentation. • End animal experiments for household product ingredients throughout Europe by 2018 • Increased investment in non-animal methods, by ring-fencing €80 million a year for the development of non-animal methods. • Set a deadline to end the “severe “testing category • Set a target to reduce the number of animals used in experiments
All species deserve the same protection. But in addition we have also urged the political parties to support an EU ban on experiments with dogs, cats and primates.
