Universal Declaration of the Rights of Great Apes

On June 6, 2014, in Madrid, the event "Great Ape Project, eight years later" was held. The purpose of the event was to denounce the failure of the bill approved in 2008 by the environmental committee of the Chamber of Deputies, which was to bring into effect a law to protect great apes. The event was held in the Clara Campoamor room of the Chamber of Deputies of Spain in Madrid

At the end of the event a manifesto based on the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Great Apes was read. This declaration aims to recognize the Great Apes as Non-Human Persons and it has been signed by a large number of scientists, organizations and personalities from different fields. This Universal Declaration of the Rights of Great Apes is intended to be approved by the United Nations.

Great apes (gorillas, bonobos, chimpanzees, orangutans ) are facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild. In Indonesia and Sumatra, it is estimated that bonobos and orangutans could disappear within five years due to the destruction of the rainforest which is their living area.

According to the Great Ape Project, great apes confined in many Spanish zoos are still living in appalling conditions, since no specific law exists to protect them.

Ong ADDA supports the GAP Declaration.
