The Catalan Parliament rejects the legalization of “tientas” (bullfighting trials)

Barcelona, March 2015.- On March 4th the Parliament of Catalonia debated, and subsequently voted, the Budgets for 2015. Taking the opportunity of this vote, the parliamentary groups of CiU (nationalists) and PSC (socialists) wanted to introduce an amendment to the Law on the Protection of Animals with the intention to modify Article 6" and authorize by law the bullfighting trials in arenas of the South of Catalonia. "Tientas" are trials where the young bulls are selected to take part in bullfights

This fact raised concern in the society. Platform PROU complained to the different political groups and the news was spread on media and social network.

Ong ADDA and other five animal rights organizations (see list below) sent a letter to all the Members of the Parliament of Catalonia, reminding them of their ethical and moral commitment to citizenship and urged them to respect the Law for the Protection of Animals that democratically banned bullfighting in Catalonia.

CiU finally withdrew from the proposed amendment, but the vote was conducted at the request of PSC. 47 MPs of the political parties: PP, PSC, Ciutadans and 2 MPs of CIU voted to legalize bullfighting trials, while 82 MPs from the parties ERC, ICV, CUP and CiU voted against the proposal.

Ong ADDA and Platform PROU consider this a positive result because it was unacceptable that any form of bullfighting be allowed, after many years of campaigns and the citizens’ demands to ban it in Catalonia.
