Barcelona, May 2015.- "Adam and Eve", two chimpanzees who lived in captivity in the Zoo Sa Coma in Sant Llorenc des Cardassar (Mallorca) managed to escape last week, by breaking the bars of their cage. The female was shot dead hours after she escaped and the male was found a few days later, allegedly drowned in a water treatment plant. The animal rights organizations asked the authorities to use tranquilizer darts to capture the male.
the Great Ape Project has filed a criminal complaint to the Court of Manacor, against Safari Zoo Services SL, based on Article 337 of the penal code for an alleged crime of the unjustified death of a tamed animal , as well as against any person or entity that may civilly or criminally be liable, and also requires to take actions in order to clarify what really happened
The communiqué also recalled the commitment made by the Balearic Parliament, which approved, in 2007, a non-legal bill , with the commitment to to legislate a law for great apes. This zoo had already been denounced on several occasions by animal rights associations, because of the bad conditions in which some animals are kept. Consequently , they call for the closure of the facility for gross negligence and the lack of security protocols.
