Tuna: tariff-free pirate fishing Barcelona, May 2015.- The EU allowed the European countries to import 22,000 tons of tariff-free tuna loins for 2015. 11,029 tons were bought by Spanish canning industry in four days, the first month of the year.
According the Ministry of Agriculture data, 75% of these tuna loins come from Thailand and the rest of China.
We do not know the reason for this tariff permissiveness but the worst is that piracy practices and the lack of control over illegal fishing of Thailand and China have been reported and the EU has started proceedings to Thailand. Within six months, the EU will decide if import of tuna loins from this country have to be banned.
Due to the continued plundering suffered by our seas, by allowing excessive fishing quota, and the usual illegal fishing of tuna, serious measures to protect dwindling stocks of bluefin tuna fish in the Mediterranean have been taken.
