In 2011, the French Ministry of Culture decided to include bullfights in the inventory of the country’s intangible cultural heritage. Bullfighting is only allowed in some villages and towns of southern France (in the rest of France, bullfighting is banned as it is considered a severe form of animal abuse). This decision provoked a storm of protest by animal advocates, letters to the Minister of Culture and parliamentary questions.
On June 1, the Administrative Court of Appeal of Paris ruled that, in view that the Ministry of Culture has withdrawn the technical sheet on bullfighting posted on its official website, from the inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage, "it must be considered that the decision of registration of bullfighting in the inventory of intangible cultural heritage of France is void".
