Europe begins to turn its back on bullfighting

Brussels, October.- On Wednesday, October 28, the European Parliament voted to stop EU agricultural subsidies being used to support bullfighting. The amendment was tabled by the Greens and EFA (European Free Alliance) and got 438 votes in favor and 199 against.

The amendment to the 2016 European Union budget stated that Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) funds “should not be used for the financing of lethal bullfighting activities”. CAP payments worth more than €130 million a year were being given to Spanish farmers using their pastures to rear fighting bulls.

Ong ADDA sent a letter to Spanish MEPs, urging them to vote in favor of the ban and this is the first time that we have had a favorable response.

For many years the bullfighting industry has been receiving EU subsidies. The EU General Budget for 2016 now goes to its final committee phase and we have to wait until this decision will be implemented.
