The mayor of Valencia, Joan Ribó, and the Responsible for Animal Welfare, Gloria Tello, announced on Tuesday June 7th, the decision of the town council to ban the “bulls of fire”, the most cruel form of correbous, in the districts of Valencia without prior consultation to the local population.
Consequently Massarojos, Benifaraig, Borbotó and Carpesa will not be allowed anymore to held this kind of events during the popular festivities of these small towns.
At the same time the city of Olot(Girona) , in Catalonia hold a non binding referendum on June 7th asking their inhabitants if they agree to keep on organizing bull runnings events is Olot, under to the question: “Should Olot stop organizing "Correbous"? 60% of people said YES.
This shows that when people is allowed to give their opinion, the response is always in favor to the ban.
Animal wefare associatioN, Foundation Fauna, also launched an online petition "Acabem amb els correbous the ciutat d'Olot" (Stop correbous in the city of Olot) that ADDA supports. The petition underlines that Olot declared itself an anti-bullfighting city in 2004, and consequently it should be logical a become a real anti-bullfighting city by ending bull running events once and for good.
The numbers of cities opposed to cruel bull running festivals is increasing in Spain.
