Barcelona, July 2016.- Every year more municipalities in Spain allowed in restricted areas of their beaches so that people can take their dog to the beach. So if you plan to have your dog right beside you to enjoy the beach, these are some tips on keeping your dog safe in the summer heat and prevent heatstroke.
We hope the tips below will useful to you:
Bring a thermal container with cool water to prevent them from dehydration. Dogs do not sweat. The way they cool off is by panting. You can also give them food that contains lots of water such as fruit.
Do not forget to bring a shade umbrella, to provide them some shade and a place to cool off. You can dig a small hole in the sand to find the coolness of the deeper sand.
Encourage him to get in the water and bathe . Sea water is good for the skin. When you come back from the beach, give your dog a shower to remove the salt and sand.
It is not advisable to shave dogs for summer . Dog’s coat helps keep cool and protects his skin from direct contact with sunlight and UV rays. The fur acts as a natural barrier and cools the dog.
If your dog has to wear a muzzle, make sure it is suited to his size that lets him open his mouth and stick out his tongue to gasp.
Take special care with the pads of their paws. The sand on the beach may get very hot. If your dog has tough and leathery pads, there will not any problem, but if he has have soft and delicate pads, may erode and cause injury. There are some products available to protect their pads. We recommend you consult with your veterinarian.
Avoid games of much activity, like playing with ball during the hottest hours.
Remember to always take some poop bags to keep the beach clean. Our obligation is to be responsible in all aspects.
And don’t’ forget to take some food rewards to reward him for his good behavior.
