ADDA joins the Day of Action "Animals are not Freight"

Barcelona, August 2016.- Ong ADDA took part , along with a great number of animal welfare associations around the world, in the international campaign "ANIMALS ARE NOT FREIGHT" order to draw attention of the general public and governments to the plight of farm animals, during their transportation to slaughterhouses.

the Global Day of Action was held on Monday August 29th – the 20th anniversary of the biggest live export disaster when 67,488 sheep, shipped in Fremantle ( Australia) to Jordan slaughterhouses, died when the ship carrying them burst into flames and sank into the Indian Ocean. No one rescued them.

Tens of millions of animals are in transit for days, suffering extremes of temperature and often without sufficient food, water or rest. Many die as a result. Animals are crammed into vehicles. Overcrowding will mean that some cannot lie down at all, while those who do may be injured or trampled to death. Others endure long journeys with legs trapped and injured, or painfully stooping as they are not given sufficient headroom.

2.000.000 is the total number of farm animals exported from the EU every year. Experts say that 8 hours is the time after which animals in transit really start to suffer. Animals are shipped alive, only to be slaughtered at journey’s end using inhumane methods. In particular, when animals are exported from Europe to countries outside the EU they leave behind them all the legal protection they once received. This means they can face terrible abuse during transport and at the time of slaughter.

Animals are sentient beings and feel pain and stress just like we do.

Unfortunately, the European Union, despite repeated requests from the animal welfare associations and a vast majority of the general public, still does not take steps to minimize this suffering, and promotes the increasingly industrialized intensive farming.
