Barcelona, October.- Ong ADDA and Ecologistes in Accio, circulated a joint press release asking for firmness on the maintenance of the suspension of the capture of songbirds "finches" for song contests and its definitive ban in Catalonia.
Due to the pressure of the hunting lobby, Ong ADDA and Ecologistes in Acció, alert and reassert the urgent need for a ban of this playful, cruel and lucrative activity, relied on a tradition, which harms hundreds of thousands of birds every year,
Enforcements authorities are repeatedly seizing songbirds. This is a proof that poaching is still very common in several regions of Spain.
We recall that the EU Directive prohibits the capture of wild birds and the European Commission has opened infringement proceedings against Spain because of the continued lack of protection of wild birds in the various autonomous regions that continue to give permission to capture songbirds.
Previously Ong ADDA and DEPANA already complained, in 2015, to the European Union on tand are waiting for the judicial resolution by the Contentious Administrative Court challenging the Decree of the Catalan Government of 2014 which regulated temporarily the capture of finches.
Conservation of species and biodiversity are a common concern which is above human hobbies and entertainment.
