Barcelona reaffirms its commitment to being a city without bullfights

Barcelona, 26 October 2016.- As a result of the ruling of the Constitutional Court that overturned the ban on bullfighting in Catalonia, Barcelona reaffirms its commitment to being a city without bullfights and any other show that may cause physical or psychological pain and suffering to animals. The City Council is committed to take all appropriate legal measures. It points out that provisions of the legislative framework is sufficient to guarantee the ban of bullfights and other shows involving the death of the animal.

This formal statement was approved during the meeting of the Council held on 26 October 2016, with the support of the municipal groups BComú, CiU, ERC and CUP.

The City Council fully recognizes as valid the prohibition specified in article 10.i of the Municipal bylaws, and therefore prohibited in the city of bullfights and spectacles with bulls which includes the death of the animal and the use of lance, banderillas (sticks) and sword, and any form of bullfights that take place inside or outside the bullrings, as well as bullfights simulation of any kind whatever their purpose.
